I'm talking rock that not everybody knows about. I'll start w/ Dust. Band had Marky Ramone in it! Here:
(That's *got* to be a Frazetta, haha.)
So yeah. Basically a rec thread.

Are we specifically talking about hard rock bands that may have had an impact on early metal?

Can't think of a specific band Dust had an impact on, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were *at least* a few. So yeah, I guess that works. But at the same time, they don't necessarily have to have had an impact on any metal band--as long as they're an obscure(ish) rock band that kicked major ass.
EDIT: Oh God, I hope that was clear, haha.

I was just curious because everything you posted/mentioned was basically 70s hard rock with a proto-metal feel. And I didn't want to come in and post something from last year which sounds radically different (not that I have anything like that to post) if that is not what you wanted.

Oh, that's np, man. I appreciate you taking the time to ask me to clarify tho, heh. But yeah. I'm not picky at all: I intended for all the stuff being posted here to be from the late '60s into the '70s, but if you've got some awesome contemporary stuff, that would be cool too. Witchcraft comes to mind, tho they aren't particularly obscure.

This is more progressive, but have you heard Grobschnitt - Rockpommel's Land?

The opening track is worth a quick scan to see if you are into the sound:

@ Derrick: Bloodrock! Now, there's some balls-to-the-wall rock 'n' roll. Nice rec, and I figure I'll trade ya: Really eerie and gloomy, eh? @ Dylan: Not really my cup of tea, man--but I really do appreciate the recommendation! And since you were so nice to rec something to me, I figured I'd return the favor. Astra is a recent band, but they have that same yen for moogtastic, long passages soaked in progginess and ethereal--you know what, I'm just going to shut up and provide you w/ a link, haha: (Little bit longer than your song, haha. ) @ Ganon: I second that rec!

Yep, bloodrock is awesome. Here is some more stuff someone might like:
Asgard is some decent prog rock. They only made one album, "In the Realm of Asgard" get that if you haven't.
The Flock is some bad ass underrated Jazz rock. Get the self titled!
Once again, Spirit. This is one of my favorite bands of all time.

Hey Chris! Yeah, and as long as we can click on it, I don't think that matters too much. But if you're interested: url--w/ the couple of spaces omitted, of course. @ Derrick: Interesting guitar tone in that Asgard song: buzzy and jazzy. I would say I wish shit like that was still being produced today, but I know for a fact that, well, in fact, it is! Fucking loud! Just the way I love it.
